Should I be worried....
Hello, I need to upgrade my 2 Domain Controllers from Standard to Enterprise..... from what I am reading, you just stick in the CD while in the OS etc... and do the upgrade... Should I be worried since they are DC's? Or the upgrade sees all that stuff and leaves it intact after the upgrade? Thanks

Hello, before starting make sure that the domain is error free with the support tools: dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:dcname >c:\dcdiag.txt netdiag /v >c:\netdiag.txt netdiag wan't be supported on Window server 2008 and wan't work on Windows server 2008 R2 repadmin /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite >c:\repl.txt (if more then one DC exists) dnslint /ad /s "DCipaddress" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321045) Now run at least a system state backup of the DCs and then you can start from inside Windows. Personal i prefer to NOT inplace upgrade DCs, instead install them fresh and add them to the domain: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2010/02/10/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-to-windows-server-2008-or-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

I agree with Meinolf's suggestions. I strongly agree with the statement of simply going with a fresh installation. While many upgrades go well, alot of them do not. You have to balance the risk vs pay-off. In the case of Domain Controllers, I would always go with a fresh install. Here is what I would recommend: -DCPROMO down the DC. -Verify no more AD records in AD/DNS related to this DC. -Install a fresh copy of Windows -Install any services that clients are depending on (DNS, DHCP, etc...) -DCPROMO the server up. -Start this process again for the next one.Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.
