Shares on Windows Storage Server
I have a Windows 2003 Storage server and all of my companies shares are located on this server. The backend is an HP P4500 SAN, and we just purchased a new HP Storage blade to upgrade to Windows 2008 Storage server. Ideally I was hoping to detach the storage presented to the W2K3 Storage server and presented to the W2K8 storage server and everything be huncky dory. My storage admin says it won't work that way and that all the shares will have to be manually created on the new storage server, it's about 178 shares. Does anyone know why this can't work or have a suggestion on how to migrate this?Salvador Diaz III

Folder shares are specific to the host on which they reside. E.g. on Server_A you have FolderShare_A and that is located on D drive of Server_A, you share the folder FolderShare_A and assign NTFS permissions and access the folder share using \\Server_A\FolderShare_A from network. Now, though you have your shared folders on Shared Storage, shares are still attached to Server_A ! If you detach shared storage from Server_A and attach that to Server_B, shares will be removed and will not be accessible over network. Generally Shared folders are created on NTFS Windows Servers, so if you detach Storage from Server_A and attach that storage to Server_B, data will be still accessible but not the Shares or Permissions. However, you can migrate shares from one server to another. Here is a nice Wiki article ...
