SharePoint 2013 search result types customization

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever created a result type to support .mpp (MS project plan) or .XLT file types? I've been taking a look at the OOTB result types that cover the typical document types like excel, word, ppt, etc.....but I was curious about other document types and if anyone has been successful in making it work? Thanks! :)

Hi,

The SharePoint crawl component can only crawl a file if the list on the Manage File Types page includes the file name extension. The following table shows all the file formats that SharePoint 2013 has built-in format handlers for. The table shows one or several format ID and file name extensions for each file format. By default SharePoint 2013 is enabled to parse files that have these file formats and file name extensions. For each file name extension the table also indicates whether the Manage File Types page by default includes the file name extension.

So for .xlt file, SharePoint 2013 can crawl it if you add it on the Manage File Types page as SharePoint 2013 has built-in format handlers for. But for .mpp file, SharePoint cannot crawl it even if you add it on the Manage File Types page. You need to  install the appropriate IFilter to make it crawlable.
