Shadow Copy hang up

Dear All,

At first i would like to say sorry for my English..

At my friend's company has one physical server running Windows 2008 R2 for File Server and Virtual Server inside that running windows 2008 R2 for ADDS. The Physical Server has 20 Gig of RAM and 4 Gig of RAM assigned to Virtual Server

-Recently Some clients complaint that, they can't retrieve files from previous version on their machines..

Mean previous version stop working from May of 2015...

These is what i tried to fix on Server.

1-Computer Management==> Right click on "Share Folder" after that, i got nothing! Only "Gray" at the "Title bar" of computer management. It's seems hang up! if i tried to click on that screen,it's become not respond.

==>Two days later, I restarted server(Took 1 hour to completed the restart),

==>After Restart, I could got into "Shadow Copy" property..and saw the scheduled still there and after that, the previous version start to appear on every clients' machine..

==>Sadly, On 8 of July, our clients informed that, they can't retrieve files from 6 and 7 of July because it stop working..

So i went to check the server.. i can got into "Shadow copy"  and still can see the scheduled there, but it's seems hangup or slow..

So i checked the process, I saw one process taking 7 gig of ram and i killed it..after that, today "Previous version" is available all clients machine again..

This is my questions.

1-Is VSS process is beginning to corrupt? because every time when i tried to go to "Shadow Copy",it always hang up or so slow. If so can you help me where can i download hot fix for Shadow Copy on WIndows Server 2008 R2?

2-Is "Shadow Copy" some time work some time not work cause by not enough RAM?

I would like to say thanks for all your help!

Best Regards,

Hi,

"it always hang up or slow" - does the issue still exists after you kill the 7GB RAM process, or after a reboot?

To me the issue seems more related to the process you killed. I assume it causes everything slow but not just VSS.

Generally if VSS works in some time, it is not a component issue (or it will fail forever until you get the issue fixed). VSS could time-out when there is no enough system resource. So it is better to get the memory leak issue fixed first and see if VSS will still stop working sometimes. Specifically, install all updates for the operation system.

Dear Mr.Moderator,

So much thanks for  your best help and time!

"does the issue still exists after you kill the 7GB RAM process, or after a reboot?

First time when it was error,

1-I try to reboot, and after that it was working that i can go to "Shadow Copy" and it was appear shadow copy property  as well.

2-Few days later, Shadows copy not working more.. I notice that, when "Shadow copy" not working, when i tried to Right Click on hard drive on server, and choose Property, and click on "Shadow Copy" tab, it was hang up and if i click on Hard Drive property Screen, it was become not respond..so i killed some process to get free memory, it was working fine..so i thought this was cause by not enough memory..So after that "Shadow Copy" working fine..

3-Today 7/13/2015

"Previous Version" on every clients' machine not working ! The scheduled was setup "Take Snap shoot" from 8 am every one hour, but i didn't see it's taking from 8am..

When i check on server this moment, i tried to "Right Click" on Hard Drive and "Shadow Copy" it was hang up and spin around for cursor.. if i click on the screen, it's will not respond.. even i kill some process to get some free memory but still not help..

Could you help me , which Update Code to fix this problem? also i saw a lot available update in Windows Update, but i still not understand each codes working for? also one of my friend, he said some update might be get blue screen after restart..

This is my screen shoot of current server process.

Please provide.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in reply.

As it will back to work by kill some processes, please first confirm if it is caused by one of the processes you killed.

Also have a try to re-register VSS related files as listed in this article:
