Shadow Copies - Dedicate volume strategy?
2008 R2 File Server with 5 x 2tb data volumes presented via the iSCSI initiator. I want to use shadow copies, but having had it enabled a couple of days on the defaults it's clear that even with 2008 R2 a lot of the fun stuff about shadow copies on 2003 R2 is still there i.e. shadow copies randomly lunching themselves due to too much IO: "The shadow copies of volume I: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time. Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied." How do you have your configured? I don't really want to create 5 new volumes just for shadow copies, so should a single volume of, say, 500gb suffice with each volume set to use a maximum 100gb for shadow copies? Can you even set the same volume as the shadow copies target for multiple source volumes? Thanks.

Wow I've never seen that error and use shadow copies quite extensively. Any way to speed up the disk? Are you using the default schedules?Regards, Bill

This issue may occur when one or more of the following conditions are true: The Volsnap.sys driver has encountered excessive I/O activity. Therefore, the "diff" area cannot grow The computer has run out of shadow copy storage space. To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods: When the cause is insufficient shadow copy storage space, double the storage space allocation.Use a second hard disk exclusively for shadow copy storage.Increase the free disk space that is available on the volume that is used. Put the shadow copy storage on another volume, even if the volume is located on the same hard disk.Make sure that the volume that causes event ID 25 is not the same volume that contains the paging file. If the volume that causes event ID 25 contains the paging file, consider putting the paging file on another volume.Make sure that the volume that causes event ID 25 is not used as the shadow copy storage for any other volume.
