Servicing Linux Clients - Design and Deployment
Hello,
I seem to have a case not covered in the documentation (or not obvious to me where the correct documentation is).
I have a fully functional AD structure, it's at least at the 2008 level.
I have a NEW need to add Ubuntu Linux clients. I would LOVE to use AD credentials for access control to these clients.
Several Questions:
1) Are the "Services for Unix" in 2008 R2 intended for migrated (legacy) Unix/Linux installations or can they be used for new deployments? The documentation for NIS implies migration only; no native installation seems to be addressed: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755243.aspx
2) How would you go about adding Linux workstation clients in such an environment?
- would you authenticate directly to the AD infrastructure and forego an NIS intermediary?
- how would you mount home directories? NFS? SMB?
- can this be done using only MS tools/software? I'd like to avoid 3rd party solutions
3) How would you handle mail? Campus wide, we have an Exchange 2010 system. The users of these Linux clients are crusty old Unix/Linux birds with excessive amounts of influence. When they whine, things happen.
Thanks,
SC
