Only case I remember SQL Server service pack can fail due to space issue is when Drive on which resource database resides does not have enough space.

As per MS

Make sure enough space is available on drive where resource/system databases are present. Resource database is utilized during service pack upgrade. The Resource database makes upgrading to a new version of SQL Server an easier and faster procedure. In earlier versions of SQL Server, upgrading required dropping and creating system objects. Because the Resource database file contains all system objects, an upgrade is now accomplished simply by copying the single Resource database file to the local server.

Please make sure space is enough

I had same issue.

Check log files at,

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20150xxxxxxx\MSSQLSERVER

"Summary_servername_datestamp.txt"

This file should give a more plain-english information about the error. For us it was as some others have stated an incorrect Data Root folder.

Check registry and path set at this key (note the "MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER" is default instance and might differ for you):

\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\Setup\SQLDataRoot

Ours had changed - updating this entry fixed.
