Server not recognizing my memory
I just built a Windows Server 2008 x86 Enterprise and according to the article at http://www.directionsonmicrosoft.com/sample/DOMIS/update/2008/02feb/0208ws2plp_ch.htm the Enterprise edition is suppose to recognize up to 64GB of RAM. Well I have 8GB of RAM in this server and according to the Task Manager and Resource Manager I only have 256MB. But if I pull up the Control Panel -> System Information it says I have 8GB of RAM. Please let me know what is going on here. Please know this is kind of urgent as I am trying to get this server up for a project that is getting started in a few weeks. Thanks in advance,Lee

Are you sure your checking the correct fields in the resource manager? There should definetly not be a limit of 256 MB. Highly doubt you could even start the OS with 256.

When I first installed the OS it said min requirement was 512MB so you are correct that it should not work. But I am looking at the right fields. The System information says 8GB. In task manager, the Total under Physical Memory (MB) says 254. If I could attach a picture I would show you exactly what I am seeing.

Could you try running Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx) and check what System Information say about your total psychical memory ?

Hi, Please take a screen shot and then upload to your site, then paste the path of the picture here. Please also go to BIOS to check whether you can see 8GB’s memory. By the way, you can perform the steps in the following post to insert a picture in the forum. Tips! How to insert picture on the Technet forum http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/2b9f390a-5e01-40b4-a923-4a5899ddbd27 Best Regards, Vincent Hu

Hi, Please run systeminfo on an elevated CMD command prompt line and then provide the screen shot. By the way, please unplug all memories and then just leave one in the slot, start the computer to check whether you can get the proper size. You can add the memory one by one to the computer to do the same test. Please also boot the computer into Safe Mode to check. Best Regards, Vincent Hu

Hi, Try to enable "memory Remapping" feature in the BIOS. Good Luck.

Ok... The BIOS says 8GB. SystemInfo says 256mb. I am not able to physically get to the machine today, so I will have to wait till tomorrow for doing the memory check and the booting in safe mode. Just so there is no confusion, I had someone reboot the machine and check the bios settings. So that is how I know what the bios says. -LK

The following places report how much physical memory installed on your computer: l The RAM value in the Welcome Center. l The Memory value at the bottom of the My Computer windows. l The Memory (RAM) value in the System Properties windows. l The Total amount of system memory value of the View and Print Details page of the Performance Information and Tools item in Control Panel. However, the Task Manager Physical Memory (MB) Total value is reporting how much memory is availble for use by the Operating System. If you look at the Physical Memory Usage History graph to the left you will see that roughly 7.75GB of memory is being used, leaving approx 256MB ram for use by the OS. Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008 may report less memory than you expect http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929580/en-us Windows Vista SP1 includes reporting of Installed System Memory (RAM) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/946003/en-us Note: this article also applies to Windows Server 2008. I ended up removing all the memory and putting in some other memory we had here. I then booted the machine to the BIOS and it recognized that 4GB just fine. So, I turned the machine off and replaced the same 8GB sticks and suddenly everything is working fine. I have no idea what is going on, but it is working now. Thanks everyone for your support. -Lee
