Server constant network time out request
Hi, Two of windows 2003 server shows "request time out" when i ping to other servers. This issue occurs on two servers. I have been monitoring for 5 days now and have in average of 4 or 5 request timed out for the whole day. I have gone ahead and replaced the LAN cable but still same problem of request time outs. I believe it could either be a network card problem or an OS problem. Please check the below details from your end and let me know if you can advice anything why this happens. All servers terminate at the same switch, and only two have these issues. Hello, all your posted information is not really helpful. If i understand you correct you set a constant ping for one day and 4 or 5 replies are timed out. This can happen and is not a problem, if i misunderstood you please correct me.Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from a problem server and a server working correct.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

HI, thanks for taking interest and replying back. In actual we have been monitoring ping responces from our 2 remote servers 1 local. All three were showing "request timed out" on varied timings. its been almost 5 days now that we have been monitoring and have recieved several "request time out" in a 24 hour period. I replaced the LAN cables and now have replaced the switch and port. So far it seems stable but we are still monitoring. I was wondering if this could be a system OS level issue. How is it that its normal when you say "this can happen and not a problem"..this server will be used for live reporting (i.e collecting stats on seconds interval) so its critical that it stays up forever. Ping requested out usually last for 10-30 seconds and occur again after 5 hours. please let me know. We have SP2 installed on windows server 2003. thanks.

Hello,i have seen it in our systems multiple times that sometime a ping is lost. And 4-5 per 24 hours ping test is not that much. For switches you can also check the port speed and use fixed settings on them and also on the servers instead of autosensing. Also make sure to use the latest drivers for the NICs, according to the NIC output they are from 2008.Also you can try an extended ping with bigger packages to check connectivity and data loss:ping -l 1024 ipaddress -t Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Thanks again. Yes, there are significant packet loss errors when large packets are sent. I used FPING rather than PING. So configuring the ports at switch should resolve these issues as you suggested. Reply
