Server can only ping one way!
Hi,we've got a server (Windows Server 2003) that can ping anything on the network, but it cannot be pinged from any machine on the network. This is not caused by firewall or related issue. It started after a reboot. I've tried resetting the TCP/IP stack, restoring system state, everything I can think of, but no luck. What can cause this? How do I fix it?

What is service pack of your WS2K3? Is it SP2? It's possible, the issue may come from Windows firewall.Do you check your Firewall on your WS2K3Thana

Hi,As ThanaPha said, please check Windows Firewall settings on Windows Server 2k3. In my opinion, you could temporarily disable Windows Firewall for check.Does it work?Meanwhile, please collect the MPSReport from the problematic server. 1. Download proper MPS Report tool from the website below. Microsoft Product Support Reportshttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=CEBF3C7C-7CA5-408F-88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en 2. Double-click to run it, if requirement is not met, please follow the wizard to download and install them. After that, click Next, when the "Select the diagnostics you want to run" page appears, select "General", Internet and Networking, click Next. 3. After collecting all log files, choose "Save the results", choose a folder to save <Computername>MPSReports.cab file. Use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give me the download address. Thanks,Miles

Install network monitor and capture the packets leaving the NIC as you do a ping. Filter on the ICMP protocol type (PING). That will tell you if the packet is leaving the server at all. Also try usingpathping and tracert to see if those respond, they use ICMP as well, but different functions of the protocol.

Hi TherePlease follow the above procedure. The first way is to take a trace and find out the packets as gunner999 said.Second can you try this in safe mode in networking ?Third try changing the switch port and check the behavior ( cross over cable is best to identify the NIC card )

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your replies!ThanaPha - it's running Win Server 2003 SP2, and Windows Firewall is off, service is disabled, checked it a hundred times, event with netsh.Miles - will post it...Gunner - did that and I see incomingecho requests, but no outgoing (??). Also tried the other tools but no luck.Sainath - I did all of those right at the start, no luck.Anyway, we upgraded the server to WS2K3 R2 SP2 and that fixed the problem!! Downside is we still have NO clue what caused it. I think it might be corrupted system files or something that got updated, but I really have no idea.
