Server 2012 Essentials Restore files not working

Sorry, r2 with essentials role installed, not server 2012 r2 essentials.  All updates installed

As soon as I select which backup I want, click next, wizard stops.

Yes 7 and 8.1

Same error same exact place

6 gig ram on server

No z drives

February 19th, 2015 9:24pm

I have a brand new install of server 2012 essentials running on hyper-v. have connected 4 test computers using the essentials connect method, 7 Pro and 8.1. backups are working daily with no errors. thought I would test a restore and I am getting the message, "Restore Files and Folders wizard has stopped working.

unfortunately this is the very first time I tried a restore so I can't say if any updates are the issue.

anyone else had similar issue?

This is 2012 and not 2012 R2?  All systems are fully patched/up to date?

How far into the restore wizard do you get? From both Win 7 and 8 clients?  Same error, same place?

How much RAM is assigned to the server? The client PC's do not currently have a Z: drive attached do they?

What errors do you see in the event log when the crash occurs?? Have you tried uninstalling the problem Windows Update from the client PCs as per the Crash restoring files from client backup thread??

Thanks, that worked this time.  I know I tried it before with no result.  I did not remove from the server this time where as the first attempt I did.

Thanks for the help

Great stuff.  So you leave update KB3023562 on the server, remove it from the clients, and it will open backups.

Grey that is correct.  All seems to work as it should with kb3023562 removed from the client.  And actually, I removed it only from the client running the restore and the files can be restored on any client, even if the update was not removed.  I will test some more to confirm
February 21st, 2015 1:02pm

Just more info - KB fix didn't work consistently for me.  Have server 2012r2 Essentials with backups and started with KB3023562 installed.   Two win 8.0 enterprise systems updated to date (2/25) with KB3023562 removed.  Client restore wizard always fails.  Two win8.1 enterprise systems updated to date - KB3023562 removed. Client restore now works perfectly.  Again both systems tested before and after KB remove to ensure problem existence.

Removed KB from server - no change on either group of machines.  Something more going on.  Found a laptop with 8.0 enterprise that's not updated to current.  Will test that one out to see if there is something else going on.

For those who find this...  all my windows 8 enterprise systems were only fixed by only removing both KB3004375 and KB3023562.  All My win 8.1 enterprise systems were fixed by only removing KB3023562 as noted in earlier in this thread (note I didn't check to see if KB3004375 is in the update list for 8.1).

how many more times are we going to have to go through this?

A very good question, to which the only logical answer is 'as many times as it takes them to get it right' ;) It does seem that they've done so for Windows 8.1 with the latest set of updates but not for Windows 7, sadly.
