I was wondering about the legality of sending a server with Server 2008 R2 Standard (licensed with our companies VLK) off site to a customer’s site where the server will be running monitoring software for my company. We do not sell the customer the server and maintain ownership of the server the whole time.

Hi As per article http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/product-licensing-faq.aspx (Section: Third Party Use) this is possible if the operations are of benefit to your company. While this does not deal direct with your query, if the server is not being rented/sold and is an asset of your company performing a function in the field then I believe the VLK to be applicable in your case.
