Server 2008 reboot on logoff when WU pending
Hey guys, I have a file server running 2008 Storage Server SP2 x64. Whenever there is a pending reboot needed per Windows Update, if I choose to logoff the machine will restart. There is no prompt, no warning, it just does it. My user is a domain admin, and this happens locally as well as via RDP. The following post seems to be getting no more attention so I thought I'd start a new thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-GB/winservergen/thread/3501558e-acfd-4d69-985f-b4ee3cc7dfe5?prof=required Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Thanks, Nic

Pretty sure this doesn't apply to me for a few reasons: 1. Everything I see related to the article you sent has mostly to do with XP SP2/3 2. 'Restart Issues' in this article, although vague, seems to be more related to blue screening and continued restarts rather than my specific issue when logging off. 3. The 'update' portion of that article title is an update to the original article and is not referring to Windows Update restarts. 4. My issue ONLY happens if I logout when there is a pending restart needed per Windows Update. Maybe I missed something, but I'm pretty sure I didn't. Thanks again for your help.

HI Please confirm if you applied GPO to install updates via WSUS for that server, please check if configured the option (no auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates ) This option will make restart if no user logged on

Hello, I have the same issue. It's especially annoying when I logoff from some rdp maintanance task and dozens of users get kicked off the database due to restart. I have confirmed that the GPO under Computer Config/Admin/ Windows Update has the following settings: Configure Auto update: enabled: 4=autom. download and install by schedule; install 0(=daily) at 03:00 Set internal update past: enabled: http://myWSUSserver no auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates: enabled install updates immediately: enabled The way I understand the option (esp. "no auto restart ..."), setting this to "Off" would merely tell a logged in user to quit soon and would reboot after 5 minutes. With setting "On" there is only a hint that the user should restart the computer. In fact I do observe the messages urging me to reboot, but even when answering "no" the box reboots as soon as the last user logs out - no matter what kind of business critical applications are still running even with no user logged in. It appears that an auto reboot at 03:00 would be preferred, but then a logged in user would be kicked out without a chance of intervention?

Are the DC's on your domain running 2003 or 2008?

FYI: This issue was resolved from me once I began managing the GPO's from a Windows 7 machine (Vista or 2008 will work too). Apparently it seems the WU GPO's were not being handled correctly by the Win 2008 file server on my 2003 domain. This is likely because of the new ADMX format. http://forums.techarena.in/active-directory/1087610.htm http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc709647%28WS.10%29.aspx Hope this helps.

Changing the following GPO as per Sameh Khairy's post and restarting the Windows Update service solved the problem for me. Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations Huzzah for undocumented behaviour!
