Server 2008 on HP server
I have an HP DL380 G3 and a DL380 G4. I was looking around and read that hp does not list these servers as being able to run windows server 2008, but had seen others had been able to run it on them. Do any of you know of a way to test it out or have any
personal experience in running 2008 on either one of these servers? I don't really want to buy it without a 95% chance of it working.
Thanks

Hello,
Yes and No.
The main thing here is going to be the raid controller. Find out what RAID controller it has and look in the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility Guide (HCL). Also, make sure it x64 architecture since only SBS is able to run x32.
I have been able to install 2008 on several old Dell servers using an External USB DVD drive, and they run fine.

Unfortunately, if the mgf says no, you will be rowing against the tide because you will not have driver support, updates, etc. Not a good idea for a production system but may be worth it if it's for a lab.Miguel Fra /

Hi,
First of all, it the servers are not listed in the support list, you may not be able to get support from HP. If you don’t care the support, you
may try to get it work.
By the way, based on the following posts, it seems that HP DL380 G3 can works with Windows Server 2008.

I have installed (and still running) Windows 2008 SP 2 on both G3s and G4s.
I can understand reusing existing boxes...but why would you buy such outdated servers?

I was able to buy them very cheap under $100 for both to use in my small business and also just to use as a learning tool. Thanks for the help I will have to go out and get 2008 and give it a try.

The easiest way to install Windows server on the HP product line is by way of the SmartStart CD. You can download it from the HP website.
