Server 2008 Windows Update Not Working
I have a machine running Server 2008 X64. Windows update refuses to run. Starting the control panel applet produces a screen with nothing on the screen. I am unable to close, move, minimize or otherwise do anything with the screen. I have to use task manager to terminate the task.I am unable to stop the Windows Update service in the services control panel which generates an error code 1053 indicating the services could not be stopped in a timely manner.I have looked in the event log and find nothing for windows update. I looked in the log for windows update and I find nothing.I have restarted the server and that did not change any of the behavior. How do I get Windows update running again? The last few lines from the windows update log file are below.2008-07-2507:42:38:558 33637cReport*********** Report: Initializing static reporting data ***********2008-07-2507:42:38:558 33637cReport * OS Version = 6.0.6001.1.0.1968822008-07-2507:42:38:558 33637cReport * OS Product Type = 0x0000000A2008-07-2507:42:38:605 33637cReport * Computer Brand = Intel2008-07-2507:42:38:605 33637cReport * Computer Model = S5400SF2008-07-2507:42:38:605 33637cReport * Bios Revision = S5400.86B.06.00.0025.0322200823162008-07-2507:42:38:605 33637cReport * Bios Name = BIOS Date: 03/26/07 12:03:20 Ver: 08.00.102008-07-2507:42:38:605 33637cReport * Bios Release Date = 2008-03-22T00:00:002008-07-2507:42:38:605 33637cReport * Locale ID = 10332008-07-2507:43:01:332 33637cAgent*********** Agent: Initializing Windows Update Agent ***********2008-07-2507:46:20:629 336138Agent*********** Agent: Initializing Windows Update Agent ***********2008-07-2507:48:33:173 3362ecAgent*********** Agent: Initializing Windows Update Agent ***********Ray Thompson

Hi Ray, Please launch the Services snap-in (services.msc) and locate the Windows Update" service and then check if you can manually start the service. Please also check whether the content and security are correct for the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv If there are another working Windows Server 2008 machine available, please export the above key from the working machine and import it to the problematic one. 1. On the reference server, click Start -> Run, type "regedit" in the text box, and click OK. 2. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv 3. Right click this key and click Export to backup this key to a registry file. 4. Copy the exported registry key to the problematic server. 5. On the reference server, click Start -> Run, type "regedit" in the text box, and click OK. 6. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv 7.Right click this key and click Rename to rename this key to wuauserv_old. 8.Double click the exported registry file to import the file. 9.Reboot the server into a Clean Boot environment to test again. Hope it helps.Your potential. Our passion.
