Server 2008 Standard Task Scheduler
The task scheduler has a "launch failure" error when starting a scheduled task. This is a script to backup files daily that I have been using for 3 or 4 years. The problem started with an occasional failure. At first with Win 2008 I would delete the task and then setup a new task and it would run correctly for a few weeks. It has gradually gotten worse to where it fails almost every evening. I can run the script successfully manually ouside of the Task Scheduler so the script seems to be okay. Now the task scheduler will not run it at all, either on a schedule or on demand. Is there a known fix for this problem?

The task has completely stopped working from the Task Scheduler. Here is the error log: - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler" Guid="{de7b24ea-73c8-4a09-985d-5bdadcfa9017}" /> <EventID>101</EventID> <Version>0</Version> <Level>2</Level> <Task>101</Task> <Opcode>101</Opcode> <Keywords>0x8000000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2011-02-23T05:04:56.014Z" /> <EventRecordID>106549</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="1016" ThreadID="1328" /> <Channel>Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler/Operational</Channel> <Computer>WIN-2008-Server</Computer> <Security UserID="S-1-5-18" /> </System> - <EventData Name="TaskStartFailedEvent"> <Data Name="TaskName">\Daily Backup</Data> <Data Name="UserContext">WIN-2008-SERVER\Administrator</Data> <Data Name="ResultCode">2147942402</Data> </EventData> </Event>

Hi, Please provide us more information and clarify the following questions: 1. When did the issue begin to occur? If recently, have you installed software, updates or hardware? 2. I see that you use a script to backup files, can you give more information on the script? 3. Why not using the build-in Backup feature in Windows Server 2008? What is the backup about? Personal files? Do you want to back up to a network share? First, please check the following link: Event ID 101 — Task Properties http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/event-id-101-task-properties.aspx Please double check to make sure the conditions and settings tab are properly configured. Please review the effective permissions of the account you are using to execute the script. If the issue persists, for further troubleshooting, please help gather the following files: 1. History log ============ Go to Task scheduler library, locate the failure task, go to the History tab, in the history panel, highlight all the items, right click and choose Save all event as…., name the file as test.evtx. Please repeat the steps on all the problematic tasks. 2. Event Log ============= 1. Click "Start", click “Run”, input "eventvwr" and press Enter. 2. Expand the "Windows Logs" node on the left pane, right-click on "Application" and click "Save All Events As"; in the pop-up window, click to choose the Desktop icon on the left frame, input "app" in the "File name" blank, and then click save. 3. Right click on "System", with the same method, save it as "sys". 4. Locate the two saved log files on the Desktop and send them to us. Please upload these file to the following workspace. ------------------------------------------------------------ You can upload the information files to the following link. 1. When did the issue begin to occur? If recently, have you installed software, updates or hardware? The problem started several months ago as an occasional failure but now the task fails every day. This is a customer's server so the only SW that I am aware of that has been installed is "Payclock Terminal Service Manager" installed in September of 2010. No new HW has been installed. 2. I see that you use a script to backup files, can you give more information on the script? VB Script That maintains a 5 day backup by deleting the oldest backup first then renames the remaining 4 and the creates a new BU1 and save the latest data to BU1 3. Why not using the build-in Backup feature in Windows Server 2008? What is the backup about? Personal files? Do you want to back up to a network share? This backup is a data backup of one folder. It is backing up to a USB connected waterproof/fireproof hard drive. Will Windows Server backup work to backup a single data file? Please double check to make sure the conditions and settings tab are properly configured. Please review the effective permissions of the account you are using to execute the script. Running as administrator and the script is set to let the administrator have full control. Requested files have been uploaded to Microsoft.
