Server 2008 R2 with SP1 is not processing Group Policy settings at logon
Greetings all, In our infrastructure, we are using Roaming Profiles for our users. An issue that we have come across since installing SP1 on some of our Windows Server 2008 R2 systems has us concerned. We have client systems running Windows 7 (without SP1) that RDP to the 2008 R2 SP1 server, but when the user account logs into the server (via RDP) not all of the Group Policies are processed. The one policy we are aware of that is not processing is the Folder Redirection Policy. When we use the same Win 7 client to RDP to a 2008 R2 server without SP1, we do not have this issue. After logging into the Server 2008 R2 SP1, we notice in Windows Explorer that the shortcut to My Documents has be removed and that two shortcuts that we removed (Desktop and Downloads) have re-appeared. We can reproduce this issue. Any ideas? Thank you, David

Hi David, Please help clarify the following questions first: 1. How about the user logs on the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP 1 directly instead of via RDP? 2. Do you find a server which worked fine before installing SP 1 and the issue occurs after having SP 1? From the problematic 2008 R2 SP 1 server (via RDP from Windows 7 client), please check whether the user can access the redirected folders on server. If not, please write down the exact errors. For further troubleshooting, please also help gather the following files. Folder Redirection log on problematic 2008 R2 SP 1 server ========================= a. Click "Start"->"Run", type "eventvwr" (without quote), press Enter. b. In "Event Viewer" console, in the left panel, locate to: Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\Folder Redirection c. Right-click "Operational", please ensure "Disable Log" shows. NOTE: it indicates that the event log is enabled now. d. Right-click "Operational", click "Save all Events As" to save it as (*.evtx) file. e. Please send the file to me. GPMC log =========== a. On domain controller, click Start -> Run, type GPMC.MSC, it will load the GPMC console. If the GPMC snap-in is not installed, b. Right click on "Group Policy Result" and choose wizard to generate a report for the problematic 2008 R2 SP 1 server and user account. (Choose computer and select the proper user in the wizard) c. Right click the resulting group policy result and click the "Save Report…" => save report to save the report to a HTML file. Upload these file to the following workspace. ------------------------------------------------------------ You can upload the information files to the following link. Hi Nina, Q1. How about the user logs on the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP 1 directly instead of via RDP? A1. We have the same results. Some folders not created (no error messages). Q2. Do you find a server which worked fine before installing SP 1 and the issue occurs after having SP 1? A2. We have several servers that did not have this issue before installing SP1. Q3. From the problematic 2008 R2 SP 1 server (via RDP from Windows 7 client), please check whether the user can access the redirected folders on server. If not, please write down the exact errors. A3. The redirected folder is not even created. The folders we redirect to the server are created/populated on the local system (the system we RDP’d to). There are no error messages I have uploaded two files to the link you provided: “OperationalLog.evtx” and “sp-test on svfr07.htm”. Additional information: The servers we are connecting to via RDP have SP1 installed, but the client system and the DC’s do not have SP1 installed. As a test, we installed SP1 on one of the client systems and used it to RDP to a server that has SP1 installed, and we did not have a problem with folder redirection. Thank you! David

There are no error messages Hi David, Sorry for the delay. I have missed your last post. As you said that “the redirected folder is not even created…”, do you mean the newly created user account? Were you trying to redirect “Documents”? When Group Policy applied Folder Redirection on the user previously, the folder was created automatically. Please check it on your side. As the above workspace has expired, do you mind upload the files to the following new workspace for research? I will get back to you as soon as possible. Whom ever is looking into this issue, no need to continue. We have found that the Domain Controllers needed to be updated with SP1 to correct the folder redirect issue. Having the client sysems with SP1 and the DC's without SP1 is the cause for folder redirect (Group Policy) to fail. David
