Server 2008 R2 SP2 and WinSXS folder

How do I clean up folder WinSXS in Server 2008 R2 SP2? I noticed there are plenty of tools and updates for SP1 but they do not apply to the system.

Currently the folder is 16 GB and I would love to free up some space.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
problem is that the update on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2852386 is not for SP2 versions.

It is not recommended to do directly delete files from WinSxS folder.
Use Disk Cleanup - you can either install it as part of Desktop experience feature or just copy required files as described here: http://www.3guysonsharepoint.com/?p=1165

Hello,
problem is that the update on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2852386 is not for SP2 versions.

It's a hotfix which was published in 2014 for Windows Server 2008 SP1. Since you are running the SP2 version, you should have the Windows Update Cleanup option in the Disk Cleanup wizard by default.

Just follow the steps mentioned in the KB article, and see if you can find it.

Morning, none of the options in the KB article are available, I am logged on as Domain Admin:

  • If the Windows Update Cleanup option is not displayed on the Disk Cleanup tab, click Clean up system files. If the Windows Update Cleanup option is displayed on the Disk Cleanup tab, go to step 5.

Note The Windows Update Cleanup option is available only when you log on by using administrator permissions.
  • Select the Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 system drive, and then click OK.
  • On the Disk Cleanup tab, select Windows Update Cleanup, and then click OK.

Also the folder name mentioned here (http://www.3guysonsharepoint.com/?p=1165) differs from the one on the system:
C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-cleanmgr_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_c962d1e515e94269

Hi Knorre,

Seems you are using Windows Server 2008, not Windows Server 2008 R2. The file location mentioned in the link above is for Windows Server 2008 R2. The one you mentioned above is for Windows Server 2008.

For more details, you can refer to this TechNet article: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff630161%28v=ws.10%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

Please note that the Windows Update Cleanup option is only available for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or later.
