Server 2008 R2 Lab Setup Question
Hello, I want to set up a virtual, portable lab with Windows Server 2008 R2. I want to setup 2008 R2 on an external hard drive so I can use the lab at work and home. I also want a virtual Windows 7 machine on the external HD. (I am studying for exam 70-680.) I want to run the lab on a Dell Latitude d620 (specs ) with Windows 7 32-bit is the current OS. Will I need to have 64 Bit Windows 7 on the Latitude to run the R2 lab on an external HD? Should I use virtial PC or Hyper V (not too sure what Hyper V is yet.)? Is this the best way to have portable lab with Server 2008 R2 and a W7 machine? Thank you.

you can use Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 to run multiple operating systems at the same time on the same physical computer. Switch between virtual machines with the click of a button. Use virtual machines to run legacy applications, provide support, train users, and enhance quality assurance. Virtual PC lets you create separate virtual machines on your Windows desktop, each of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete physical computer. Thanks for your reply. That takes care of one of my questions. I still have a few more. Thank you.

Hi, Will I need to have 64 Bit Windows 7 on the Latitude to run the R2 lab on an external HD? if you are planning to test Windows 2008 X86 you do not need to have Windows 7 X64.. Virtual PC is only supporting X86 OS.. if you need X64 Operating Systems so you will need to have Hyper-V that supports both X86, X64 OS VMs Should I use virtial PC or Hyper V (not too sure what Hyper V is yet.)? As mentioned above.. beside that keep in mind that Hyper-V needs X64 processor and Intel VT or AMD-V features to be supported in your processor. I think it is fine for testing

That answered my questions. I am wanting to run 2008 R2, so I need something that can handle 64bit, which the d620 is not. Thank you!

Hi, If you are using 2008 R2 x64 as the guest OS, you will need to use Virtual Server 2005 since Hyper-V s not available on Windows 7 and Virtual PC does not have 64-bit guest support. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/virtualserver/ -- Mike Burr
