Server 2008 R2 Explorer Rename Issue
Hi. I have an issue with explorer in server 2008 R2. Basically when ever you rename a folder within explorer, upon pressing enter the name of the folder will revert back to it's previous state. i.e. rename a folder from 'new folder' to 'test' will revert back to 'new folder' each and every time. I've been researching this issue for a quite a while with no avail. We have tried the following: Replacing explorer.exe file from a identical server. We've tried replacing permissions on both the folder that we want to rename and the explorer.exe again with no avail. Renaming folders on another machine again does not work. Renaming folders on the server from a different machine work fine. Application log has nothing to help with why this might be occurring. Please Help. James

Hi, Can you rename the old folders existing on the server? Is it a shared folder? As I understand that you can’t rename a new created folder in Windows Server 2008 R2 and you can only rename these folders from a different machine. Based on my research, the following hotfix may resolve your problem: The computer stops responding when you rename a folder in Windows Server 2008, in Windows Vista, in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 Microsoft Fix it Solution For An Error Message When You Use Windows Explorer to Rename Folders is now Live! Can you rename the folder using the following command? For example: Rename C:\book test The above command is used to rename a book folder to test. More info: Rename (ren) Note: you can’t specify a new drive or path for your destination. If you can rename the folder using the command, then the issue doesn’t appears to be NTFS permission related just impacts operation within Windows Explorer. Based on my further research, this kind of appearance occurs if the following registry is created: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell The above registry is related to folder redirection. If you don’ require folder redirection in your environment, please remove the folder redirection policy. Otherwise, you need to check the permissions on the above key, ensure that the users had correct permissions to those paths to allow for folder modification. Hi Dale, rename from the command prompt works fine. The registry location you mentioned remains unedited + the permissions all seem to be fine and inherited from CURRENT USER. Do you still think I need to delete the registry location mentioned even though it looks to be the default locations. Kind Regards, James

Hi, Do you enable the thumbnail cache? Based on my further research, it may be unable to rename folder if thumbnail cache has it locked. Thus please try to disable thumbnail cache and see how it works, you can create the following registry: 1. Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe). 2. Navigate to the following registry branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\ 3. On the right pane, double click on DisableThumbnailCache value, and set its value data as 1. If the registry key of DisableThumbnailCache does not exists, create a new DWORD value with that name. 4. Exit Registry Editor. 5. Logoff and login again, or restart the computer for the changes to take effect Note: pay attention to back up the registry before taking any modification. If the issue persists, I'd recommend you to use Process Monitor to track the folder rename behavior. Hi Dale, I've tried what you suggested with no avail again. I would like to go into a bit more detail also. When this error first occurred it was after installing sql server. However upon doing so it removed a previous version of sql (sql express) and left the application (Avast ADNM) that used the previous sql server unusable and had to be reinstalled as a result. I hope this helps. Kind Regards, James
