Server 2008 Enterprise - Best practices for base installations
I'm having quite some trouble finding an explicit list of best practices for creating a generic vanilla Server 2008 installation. I know there is the SBS 2008 best practice analyzer, but that is neither Server Enterprise / Standard, and doesn't seem to have a referencable sheet. We are currently doing a server 2008 assessment to creating a core image for out corporation. We are following the same guidelines and procedures that were used when we last dealt with Server 2003, during which we referenced Microsoft recommended best practices. As a small excerpt / example of what we had listed in our 2003 documentation: Default Component Installation:
AccessOpt on
AppSrv_Console on
AspNet off
BitsServerExtensionsISAPI off
BitsServerExtensionsManager off
Calc on
CertSrv off
CertSrv_Client off
CertSrv_Server off
CharMap on And ideally there is somewhere a similar list for Server 2008 if I'm in any luck.

Hi,
As far as I am aware there isn't really anything to go on as of yet.
I know with the R2 release there will be a BPA released, here is some information about it:

I guess the best way is to run up difference builds in your test environment and see what you need and don't need.
As far as best practices at the moment go, they shouldn't differ too much from Windows Server 2003, for example not installing IIS with a DC etc.
