Server 2008 - lots of sockets stuck in TIME_WAIT
Hi We are experiencing an issue with Server 2008 SP2 where there are over 20,000 sockets that are stuck in the TIME_WAIT state. I've been looking around online and found the following: http://serverfault.com/questions/250787/tons-of-tcp-connections-in-time-wait-state-on-windows-2008-running-on-amazon-aw "We have determined the cause to be the values produced by a timer function in Windows 2008 kernel API which, on many of our 64-bit platforms, will occasionally retrieve a value that is extremely far in the future. This affects the TCP stack by causing the timestamps on the TCP socket pairs to be stamped significantly far in the future." So my question is: Is there a patch/hotfix that addresses this issue? This is the fourth time in a couple of months that we have had to take the sledgehammer approach and completely reboot the box. Not something you really want to do on a production MSSQL server. Hi ryandoyle, Thanks for posting here. Have you patched the hotfix in the KB article below for your windows server 2008 host and what’s the result ? All the TCP/IP ports that are in a TIME_WAIT status are not closed after 497 days from system startup in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2553549 Regards, Tiger Li TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.
