Server 2008R2 Office 2010 standard updates failing with all other updates successful

We have an issue where all windows updates for Office 2010 Standard (version 14.0.7113.5005) running on Server 2008 R2 SP1 remote desktop server fail, all other updates succeed (e.g. system).  The error message given is code 8007006E (also 800F0902 during bulk update attempts).

This is a server at a new client site so am unsure of the history on how corruption occurred however last successful office update as about 1 year ago and failed on (KB2878225), last successful windows update 1 week ago.

We have tried the steps below and are now turning to the community for advice on how to resolve MS updates for Office 2010.

  • restarting the server and reapplying
  • microsoft support diagnostics which ran but failed on upload so gave no details although the CAB file is there
  • checked for previous versions of the installer cache (only 1 month)
  • asked business for previous support companies backups, none present/available
  • tried offline install of updates (msiexec) which fails to install
  • ran a repair of MS office 2010 from programs and features which flashes up a windows for a second and bombs out closing window
  • Applying a hotfix (KB2920813) which gives 'an error occurred while running detection' and fails
  • we have run ROIScan and compared results to other RDS server which is working correctly (one we installed)
  • Ran DISM to check with /online /cleanup /scanhealth which took a age to get past 20% but then completed with 'no component store corruption detected' !!
  • had a look at manual rebuild of cache but not suitable for so many missing packages http://blogs.msdn.com/b/heaths/archive/2006/11/30/rebuilding-the-installer-cache.aspx
  • looked at manual uninstall of office 2010 but this is last resort as unsure if the issue will remain after reinstalling office on the server

ROIScan log examples below, looks to be about 30 missing updates.  Can supply the full log if it's any help

Thanks Ethan,

Yes, does look like a corrupt install but corrupt update store as well.  Does removing the Office 2010 install with the fix-it also remove references to windows updates?  Not sure if the fresh install will re-load windows updates from microsoft or if the missing updates also cause a problem with the fresh install?

Also can the fix-it run on a remote desktop server?

Ross

Hi,

When you say "reference to window updates", do you mean the installed updates for Office products?

Running the Microsoft Fix it tool will remove everything about Office, including the services, files, registry subkeys, updates, etc. After the installation, you will need to update your new installed Office by installing any available 'Office updates' again.

It should be able to run on a remote desktop server.

Regards,

Eth
