Server 2008R2 KMS - VDI, Win 7
Hi,
I have a few questions about the Server 208R2 KMS licencing services in combination with a virtual desktop infrastructure, based on Win 7.
I just installed the KMS Service key on a Server 2008R2. It works fine and after deploying four more server they activated correctly.
Now we purchased KMS Key for 30 Win 7 Machines. We can see a Key in our license portal. Whats the next step to activate my Win 7 Infrastructure? (except of having 25 Machines ;) )
- Do I have to enter this key too, on the same KMS Server as the first Server 2008 Key?
- Which Version should be used for Win 7 VDI and KMS? (Prof/Ent.)?
- I know, when I need for example 20 Win 7 Clients more, I can upgrade my existing KMS Key. How will this work? I don't change the Key on KMS Server, just purchase an Upgrade on my Key? Why and how the KMS-Server can recognize this? The server needs to contact
Microsoft again, after first activation?
- Is there a best practise guide for Win 7 in VDI (and KMS)?
- For example I have a Win 7 KMS Key for 30 machines. What happens, when I deploy the 31st machine?
Thanks for your help!
regards,
tim

Hi Meinolf,
thanks for your reply. I know this guide and I definitely worked through much input last days...
But I can't find answers for my questions above. I think, someone who has a Win 7 VDI with KMS running can give me these answers without any thought...
thanks,

Hello Tim
The Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS host keys are hierarchial in nature, so they include the ability to enable the activation of KMS clients for Windows 7 as well as Windows Vista. Since you already are using a Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS host key, your
Windows 7 clients should start activating once the count reaches 25.
The Windows 7 KMS host key is needed if you are setting a Windows 7 machine to be your KMS host machine.

Hello Darrell,
thanks for your helpful post.
What is it about the Keyupgrades?
1. When I purchase a KMS Key Upgrade (from 30 Clients to 35 Clients) what happens next? My internal KMS Server contacts the Microsoft license center and recognize the update? Or I'll get a new key, for my KMS Server? Thought everytime, after activation my
KMS never needs an internet connection again...
2. What happens, when I have a license for 30 Win 7 clients and my KMS recognizes 31 or 35 clients? I know, I have to license these more clients, but sometimes I need very fast and spontanious 5 or more clients... can I deploy them and after that I purchase
a license for them, or will all activated clients lose the activation, because the KMS Server recognizes unlicensed clients?
Thanks for your help!

Hello Tim,
The KMS host has no knowledge of your licensing agreements, it simply responds to the KMS clients, it is not limited to the numbers in your agreement
The activation is a one time event, all it does is activate, it does not pass along any type of agreements numbers
KMS is not a compliance tool, so it does not know how many licenses you have, that is effect up to you to track separately to be in compliance. If the KMS minimum count is met, the KMS clients will continue to activateThanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
