Server 2008R2 - Dreamspark Volume License with one activation - Upgrading the CPU, will it break activation?
First off, I'd like to than MS for replying to my support request emails. A previous issue I had was also resolved very quickly. I have read on the Microsoft site about hardware changes related to re-activation of the operating system (also did a search here, but no specifics). "Significant changes" to the hardware would require a re-activation. But these "changes" apparently change from time to time and have changing weights associated to each hardware change. It seems from the Microsoft document that the upgrade I have in mind (the CPU) would not require the operating system to be re-activated. Since this is a version of Server 2008R2 obtained from Dreamspark, I am aware that it uses a Volume license key with a single activation. For this reason, I want to make sure that I am not going to break my installation by upgrading the CPU. Question: Can I upgrade the CPU in my PC without breaking the activation status? It currently has a quad core Intel CPU (4 threads), the new CPU would also be a quad core Intel CPU (4 threads).
