Server 2003 folders changing name and icon when linked to Windows 7 Client
Hi This is my first post on these forums and I wonder if anybody can help with a strange problem thats is happening on my file server? My file server is running Server 2003 Std SP2. Each user has a home folder on the file server under the path of C:\Data\Home\%username%. The Data folder is shared as Data with authenticated users F/C as the share permission, with security of domain administrator F/C, CREATOR OWNER F/C, SYSTEM F/C and domain users Create Files/Write Data, Create Folders/Append Data, Read and Execute. The Home folder is not inheriting permissions and has domain admins F/C and SYSTEM F/C I create the users home folders manually with the same share permissions as the Data folder and Security permissions of domain admins F/C, SYSTEM F/C and the end user has modify permissons. Allow inhertiable permissions is checked. I have a mixture of XP, Vista and Windows 7 clients. The problem has only started to happen since Vista was introduced and has continued with Windows 7. Now that I have the background info out the way, the problem I have is this Some of the Home folders of users with Vista and Windows 7 folders are changing name and the icon is changing as well. The icon of the folder still has the standard folder icon with the share symbol under it but there is also what I can only discribe as paper icon with the right hand corner folded down, on top of the folder icon. Also some of the folder names have changed and are the same ie I have three folders called miket. I right click on the folder, properities and the name is the same. If I change the name it changes all three folders. I can only tell which folder belongs to who by either viewing the contents of the folder or by looking at the security permissions. The end users can still access their data normally! Can anybody help with this rather strange problem Thanks in advance

I think it is similar as a bug discussed in following thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverfiles/thread/0f2c60d4-7d68-4d3c-bcb4-e255f5761dc0 Your current issue should also be caused by ownership. At first they should be the same issue as the bug (all folders are named My Documents) but after rename one of the folders, now all affected folders are renamed. You can have a test on steps provided in following article: When you redirect the Documents folder on a Windows Vista-based computer to a network share, the folder name unexpectedly changes back to Documents http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;947222 You can also try the steps provided by customers in one of the following 2 threads to see whether they can help: http://int.social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/f18da2ad-d157-439b-9af7-16eb6249f01c http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/3d62322e-1c87-400b-883b-5fa00c9363d4 If still failed, you may need to let users backup files and recreate the affected folder. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shaon Shan |TechNet Subscriber Support in forum |If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

Hi Thanks for the replies, I've sorted the problem. Renaming the desktop.ini file to desktop.old (or any extension) removes the icon and reverts the folder name, back to the correct name. Thank you once again for the help. Stuart

Hi Stuart.... I am having the exact same problem you had with the home directory folder names having the same name and if I change them, they all change to that name. I went into each of the home directory folders that were having the issue and changed the desktop.ini file to desktop.old but I am still having this problem. The folder name did not revert to the correct user. Where did you rename the desktop.ini file exactly? On the server or in the user's folders? Thanks.... Jody
