Seems like the installation files that you are using might be corrupt. You might want to try downloading again, 32 Bit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95ac1610-c232-4644-b828-c55eec605d55&displaylang=en 64 bit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=08FEC2F5-6E3B-4E0D-9314-646414D0A421&displaylang=en If the error persists, then we might want to look for interesting sections of the %windir%\svcpack.log and the %windir%\setipapi.log. If you want to have other community members look at these logs, you can post them to skydrive and post a link. You can try another download but this sounds like some core elements are broken. You could also try sfc /scannow Failing this you may need to perform a repair installation. Regards, Dave Patrick .... Microsoft Certified Professional -Microsoft MVP [Windows]

Won't even get far enough to do a repair installation. As soon as I launch it, the error comes up.

You might also try a safe mode boot. Failing that you're probably looking at a clean installation then. Regards, Dave Patrick .... Microsoft Certified Professional -Microsoft MVP [Windows]

Hi Gfordbmh, It seems that there’s some system files corrupted. Please try to do a Startup Repair of Windows Server 2003 with the Installation media before you install Service Pack 2. To do this, please follow these steps. 1. Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. 2. Restart the computer to boot from CD/DVD. If you are prompted to start your computer from the CD, do so. 3. After Setup starts, press ENTER to continue the setup process. 4. Press ENTER to select the option To set up Windows now, press ENTER. Do not select the Recovery Console option. 5. Press F8 to accept the licensing agreement. Setup searches for previous installations of Windows. o If Setup does not find a previous installation of Windows Server 2003, you might have a hardware failure. o If Setup does find a previous installation of Windows Server 2003, you may receive the following message: If one of the following Windows Server 2003 installations is damaged, setup can try to repair it. Use the up and down arrows to select an installation. To repair the selected installation, press R. To continue without repairing, press ESC. Select the appropriate Windows Server 2003 operating system installation, and then press R to try to repair it. o Follow the on-screen instructions to repair the installation. The Startup Repair process will help to fix the corrupt system files. After you’ve done this, please try to install the Service Pack 2 again. You may need to disable the antivirus software in case of any failures. Thanks you for the input. I was trying to hold off doing this but have exhausted all other ideas. Will have to do it over the weekend since this is our surgery server. Thanks

Thank you all for your suggestions but nothing has worked. No repair option on the server CD, tried the sfc /scannow and it doesn't like the SP2 disk so unless there are other ideas looks like the server group will be doing a rebuild.

Have tried both ways. From CD, downloaded most current SP2 file, and tried Auto update. No luck using any of these methods.
