Server 2003 Upgrade Troubles
So we decided to upgrade our server today to access more RAM. It was Server 2003 SP2 Standard Edition, and we downloaded the Server 2003 R2 Enterprise SP2 iso, burned it, and upgraded. After the upgrade was completed I shut down and installed an extra 4 GB of RAM for 8 GB total. After starting back up and checking the system properties, it shows up as Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (not R2), and only shows 3.25 GB of RAM (what it showed before in standard edition). The server supports up to 64 GB, and Enterprise Edition is supposed to as well. The BIOS shows 8 GB of RAM and CPU-Z shows 8 GB of RAM. It also baffles me that we downloaded the .iso for R2, but in no way, shape or form does it show any sign of R2. Any clue as to how to at least get the RAM to be recognized? Thanks in advance.

Hello, Windows server 2003 R2 consist of 2 disks, the normal Windows server 2003 and an additional one for the R2 part. So please check your download page again for the second .iso file. For the additional RAM use /PAE in the boot.ini as described in: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/pae_os.mspx http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283037Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Agree with Meinolf that if it is 32-bit Windows Server 2003, you need to use the /PAE switch to get large memory support. Here are some more information: Physical Address Extension - PAE Design http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/pae/default.mspx A description of the 4 GB RAM Tuning feature and the Physical Address Extension parameter http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291988/en-us Hope it helps. Thank you both. The /PAE switch enabled the extra RAM and the second disc finished the R2 installation. It's always something simple...
