Server 2003 Compatibility
Good point about the AD based apps. I hadn't thought about that. There aren't any. This network is a MESS. They're not really using AD. It's ugly. Thanks! yup, this is really, really me, the one the only, Chuck Vegas

Which is exactly what I'd suspected. Thanks for confirming that. Didn't mean to post in the wrong place. Thank you yup, this is really, really me, the one the only, Chuck Vegas

I have a domain running 2003 SBS. We recently acquired a company and their equipment, and they have apps running on their DC, which runs 2003 R2. I thought this would be a simple move, demote the newly acquired DC and then add it to my existing domain. Then I had an IT guy tell me I can't add it to our existing domain because of compatibility issues between the different versions of the OS. I can't believe that, but at the same time, I want to be sure. Can I demote the R2 and add it to my existing domain? One more thing, the client PCs are running Win 2000, XP and Win 7. I understand there might be issues there, but I don't think that's a problem either. Thank you!yup, this is really, really me, the one the only, Chuck Vegas

Hello, First of all, if you demote the DC of the other company (I assume that it is a single DC in a single domain) then here you will have issues with AD-based applications which are in use in this AD domain. Since you are using SBS, it will be better to ask them here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/sbsserver This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights. Hello, first the SBS forum exist for specific problems/questions with SBS http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/smallbusinessserver/threads In your specific part of adding a workgroup server with Windows server 2003 R2 as member server to an existing domain, this is not a problem. Promoting the server again as DC requires as schema upgrade on the SBS Machine to schema version 31, not a complicate step and works also on SBS. You can mix Windows server versions and also 32bit/64bit inside a domain without any problem.Best regards Meinolf Weber MVP, MCP, MCTS Microsoft MVP - Directory Services My Blog: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/ Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.
