Server2003 DNS - strange error over LAN
I set up Server2003 (iis6,dns, no ad) to act as a test box for our websites, and it all seems to work correctly. When i'm on the server i can see all our sites in Internet Explorer, from the default http://192.168.2.200to my temporary test-site of http://j.jonBut, when i'm on an xp machine on the LAN, i can only see default http://192.168.2.200None of the others show up. (web/internet sites show up normally) I've been pulling my hair out for days over this - any ideas please? ------------------------------------------------------------server:192.168.2.200 (gateway=192.168.2.1) xp (dhcp from router)ip=192.168.2.100 (gw=192.168.2.1)dns1=192.168.2.200 dns2=(isp)80.58.##.## xp>ping 192.168.2.1 AllGoodxp>ping 192.168.2.200 AllGoodxp>ping myserver2003 AllGoodxp>ping j.jon could not find hostsigsigsig

Hello,I see you trying to ping j.jon above, is this an actual server as well and is the actual web pages running from this server or from the 192.168.2.200 server? If that is the case then you may want to add a new website on the 192.168.2.200 server and points it to the http://j.jonIsaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE

I'm a bit confused where this j.jon comes into it - is that a website running on your web server or is that a server named "j" and your domain is named "jon" or what? I realise the names are probably examples but still, can you explain exactly what it is?My blog: http://cjwdev.wordpress.com

Thanks for the replies. Here's a bit more info:the server, simply called Server2003, has DNS & IIS (no AD,no Wins, no DHCP).In IIS we have numerous websites, all set to the servers ip of 192.168.2.200, & all with host header values. As an example i chose "j.jon"The default website has no header value, and has its ip address as "all unassigned".When i'm sitting at the server i can browse all websites with IE7,FF,etc. http://j.jon works just as well as all the others, inc. the default http://192.168.2.200However, when i'm sitting at an xp machine i can only access the Default. All the other websites give "internet explorer cannot display the webpage".A few more tests:stopping the default website - stops http://192.168.2.200but makes no difference to the rest.changing j.jon ip to "all unassigned" - no differenceremoving j.jon from host-header-value - now i can see the website j.jon when i type http://192.168.2.200It appears then, that only websites with Host Header Values fail when viewed from across the LAN - they still work just fine on the server itself.i'd like to blame my DNS, but i've read it may be my router. I just dont know how to diagnose further. (port checker says 80 is NOT blocked. not on server, not on xp machine. Oh, and i tried truning off ALL security Everywhereto see if that makes a difference - it didnt.)Update: i just tried adding a some of my test websites (j.jon a.testing b.testing ) to my xp hosts file and then everything worked. i could see and browse all the sites from IE & FF. So again i'm stuck with DNS (or router) trouble. Thanks,Jon sigsigsig

Another test i did: i edited my (xp) hosts file...192.168.2.200 j.jon = this resulted in my being able to see/browse the website192.168.2.200 www.a.testing = good. i could browse this site192.168.2.200 .testing = nothing! i thought i would be able to borwse all my test websites, but no such luck.I just dont understand why everything is fine on the server, but all is weird on the xp machines. Maybe its the router, but what? Anybody please - any suggestions? If I am all here, does that mean I am not all there?

Well, the quesswork continues...After much testing, and just random changes / alterations / fiddeling, i think i am a step closer.I tried doing...tracert google.comwhich gave...1) 192.168.2.1 (my router. good.)2) 192.168.153.1 (what the ____. where on earth did this come from ?)3) 130.red-80.bla.bla... (my isp and internet)unfortunately, this result is the same on my xp machine and the server. So it doesnt really tell me anything, does it?i thought the lack of dns server might be significant, but i guess not.Anybody care to comment? If I am all here, does that mean I am not all there?

Thanks everyone. But i've moved this discussion over to Network Infrastructures Servers forumwhich seems to be more dedicated to DNS stuff.PS. What the h-e-l-l is NOT swearing. The filter in this forum is a bit too keen.(maybe in Palin-land, like texass, its considered bad form -but thats a different kettle of hypocrisy) If I am all here, does that mean I am not all there?
