Securing documents
Would anyone know if Windows has a way of securing a document so it is purely only read only? For example, we do not want the users to be able to print the document, copy/paste document, email document, etc. We only want them to be able to open the document in Adobe or Word/Excel to read it. If Windows cannot do so, does anyone know of a third party product that may be able to? We have Microsoft SBS 2000 and Windows XP Professional workstation clients

You can use Information Rights Management (IRM) for that. IRM supports the Microsoft Office applications, and essentially encrypts the document in a way that the Office apps recognize and enforce those restrictions. You can get more information about here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179103.aspx. That topic has an overview of it, and describes how to plan to implement an IRM infrastructure in your organization. You can find information about the server part at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/technologies/rightsmgmt/default.mspx. This link has the Windows Server 2003 version. For Windows Server 2008, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771627.aspx(it was renamed into the Active Directory family of services). Thanks for the reply Dave. This seems to be along the line of what I am looking for. Would you happen to know if it works with non-Office type files like Adobe .pdf, etc.?

There is a full Rights Management Server SDK at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc530379(VS.85).aspx, so I would expect there to be some 3rd party apps that can do this. However, I don't know which vendors have taken advantage of this. You'd have to check with the vendor.Dave Bishop Senior Technical Writer Windows Server Networking User Assistance

Kevin,I found this in another post (here in the forums by using Bing):Programs that are compatible with Windows RMS as of March of this year: Microsoft Office System 2003 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook Microsoft Office 2007 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, InfoPath Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2003 (through the use of GigaTrust's WebServer Add-on) Microsoft Visio 2007 and Project 2007 (through the use of GigaTrust's Desktop Add-on) Adobe Acrobat Reader (through the use of GigaTrust's Desktop Add-on)[1] Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Exchange Server 2007 XPS (XML Paper Specification) v1.0 Internet Explorer (through use of the RM Add-on for IE) IIS 6.0 (through the use of GigaTrust WebServer Add-on)So it looks like Adobe (which you asked about specifically) can use RMS if you install the "GigaTrust Desktop Add-on". More info on that is at: http://www.gigatrust.com/intelligent-rights-management.shtml. I hope this helps!Dave Bishop Senior Technical Writer Windows Server Networking User Assistance
