Hi Paul,
Did those characters appear in the summary of the search results?
If yes, I suppose that the contents of the search results contain those characters.
For example, a document is displayed in the search result with those characters, then the content of the document should contain these characters.
I recommend to check each content inside the search results and compare the results.
Thanks,
Victoria

Hi Paul,
To narrow the issue scope, I recommend to verify the things below:
- Check if this issue occur with all the files.
- Check the details of the files to see if the characters are included in the metadata of the files.
Could you please provide a screenshot of the search results for further research?
Thanks,
Victoria

hi
one workaround which can be used if you won't find the reason is to use custom display template for search results. We faced with similar strange problem in the past and fixed it with custom display template:
Problem with cut titles in search results in Sharepoint 2013.
Victoria,
Thank you first of all for your help.
1. This issue only occurs with certain files. Some search results return as normal.
2. There is nothing abnormal about the meta data of the files.
3. Unfortunately, because I can't translate this, I can't post it in the event there is something sensitive.
For testing purposes, I re-searched the same key word today and some of the results returned as normal. So it's as if it has something to do with the crawl results. Not all search results are translated either, previously it was most for this keyword search, not it's only a few.
Hi Paul,
I recommend to reset the index in search service application and then do a full crawl.
Please also follow Sadomovalex's suggestion to use a custom display template to see how it works.
Thanks,
Victoria

Hi Paul,
This may be due to that the documents have been modified and the index of these documents have not been updated, so after a full crawl, the index has been updated.
Thanks,
