Scheduled tasks greyed out -- cannot Run, end task
I have a Windows 2003 domain and all of the servers in the domain are unable to run any scheduled tasks. We got hit by the Conflicker virus and we had to follow this Microsoft KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007That modified the c:\windows\tasks permissions. I reset the permissions thru Group Policy, refreshed the policy but the Run is still greyed out. I tried creating a new task and the same thing.I verified the Scheduled task service is running. How can I fix it?

Hi GilbertE, Do you have a chance to try running the malicious software removal tool on the problematic server? You may download the malicious software removal tool from the following KB The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830 Please run it and try to remove the Confilcker on the computer, if the virus still there, you may follow the manual steps to remove the Conficker.b variant on the problematic server, Virus alert about the Win32/Conficker.B worm http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007 (Please refer to Manual steps to remove the Conficker.b variant) Meanwhile, to prevent the server from being infected of the virus and other worm, we strongly recommend that you apply the update referred to in Security Bulletin MS08-067. The corresponding updates are available from the following link. Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-067 Critical Vulnerability in Server Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution (958644) http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx Hope the issue will be resolved soon. Hi there,After checking David's work around you can also try a) safe mode to check if its working thereb) Also create a seperate OU and add the client to OU so that nonoe of the grouppolices gets added to itif the service is running , try restarting it many times to check if the service is not crashing sainath Windows Driver Development

Hi atlantisite , Our company was hit with the conflicker virus and we ran into a similar issue when it came to creating a scheduled task. A temporary workaround was to stop the scheduled task service, go to c:\windows\tasks and delete the task folder. Just be aware that any task that's currently created will be deleted, so make sure you've back them up. Create a new Task folder and restart the scheduled task service. Try creating a new scheduled task and see if it works. Just be aware, that if your machine becomes infected again, you'll have to repeat this process again.

hi everyone, conficker was really annoying , i wish i could trace the person who really induced and grab that $250,000 award from MS, i would like to tell another behavior of conficker.this virus creates a seperate service underHKLM/system/ccs/services andinterestingly doesnt display under services.msc.and keep on crashing the service with "generic host process " error i took 1 day to understand what was causing this , i debugged my machine and found that there was a virus which cant be detected either by a) Mcafeeb) nortonc) etrust we have all 3 , none of these detect. only solution is to reformat the entire system.sainath Windows Driver Development

Same trouble here, but this worked it out! So thanks for the tip. I've also set the permissions on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost to it's defaults before deleting Tasks folder. My Tasks are running again...but still have some remote users with Conficker, but not for long!
