SSRS Report Model

I have a couple of SSRS servers that I have just started looking at. I believe that the Models deployed to SSRS are the same as the ones stored in BIDS Projects and also these are the same as the ones held under source control.

I am only really interested in the SMDL and Data Source, Data Source View files. Reports are created by users and SSRS is installed in native mode in 2008R2 on one server and 2012 on the other server. The users create their own reports using Report Builder 1.0 and the published Model.

The issue is that the Model is obviously the item I am concerned over. If it gets deleted / over written etc then I must be able to restore it. Also when developing I must ensure that I use the 'live' Model and make changes to that.

How do I guarantee that the Model I am editing is the same as live? Can I download it? Can I open the Model from the SSRS location in BIDS? As there are hundreds of reports linked to one Model this could be a disaster!

Thanks

M
