SSRS Home page (/Reports) gives 401 error

Everything was working until I received an email from my clients this morning telling me it wasn't working. I don't think any changes were applied to the server, but who knows - there are lots of automated patches. In reviewing the logs, I can see the exceptions below. What's my order of operations to troubleshoot this problem? I'm assuming it's some silly security setting.

Hi Kevin,

For the error message "The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized" specifically for use when authentication is required and has failed or has not yet been provided, please check details information below to help us better analysis about the issue:

  1. Please try to connect to the report server instance from the SQL Server Management Studio to see if it will succcessfully.
  2. please try to access the report server to see if it will successfully.
  3. Please open the reporting services configuration manager to delete and re-enter the  service account to make sure the password hasn't expired. Make sure that the service account backend SQL Server where your catalog databases are stored and haven't got changed. Please follow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319723
  4. I would like to know if the Reporting Services is configured to use Kerberos,
    If using Kerberos authentication, please make sure SPN is configured correctly. If using Kerberos authentication, please make sure SPN is configured correctly.
  5.  If you can access the report server, but fail to access the report manager, then it is possible that the web.config in report manager is not configured properlyhow to forward basic authentication challenge to report manager url.
    Please check the web.config file in ReportManager folder. From the error message, it seems that the authentication error occurs on rendering the UI of the report manager. Please go to the folder, c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportManager\, and find out the web.config file, and apply the following changes.
    <authentication mode="None" />
    <identity impersonate="false" />, and the entry for the httpmodule

If your problem still exists, please feel free to ask.

Vicky Liu
