Thanks for your help.  So I need to have an SSL certificate for this?   I have one from Comodo that was used for an application that is not being used anymore.  Can I use that certificate?

It's really simple. Get an SSL certificate that the clients will consider valid, install in the machine certificate store (I think you can do that in the IIS manager or just run MMC and add the certificates snap-in) and then add https to WSUS site in IIS manager (Site Bindings) on ports 8531 and/or 443 (depending on what else you're doing on the server) and update your GPOs (specify intranet setting or something like that).
