SQL 2008 express showing 4 GB limit

Hi Experts,

I'm running System Center essentials 2010 server with SQL 2008 Express version , which i knew that it had 10 GB limit on the database size. But my database has now reached 4 GB and it is giving error in the Event log 1105 to free up more disk space.

I tried increasing the file size but it says my license limit is 4 GB. Please let me know if it is only 4GB limit on SQL 2008 express and do i need to upgrade to SQL 2008 R2 express.

If i need to upgrade what are the steps in upgrading SQL 2008 express to SQL 2008 R2 express.

regards

Sure you can, run the installer of 2008 R2 (or 2012 or 2014) and choose upgrade Installation.

Olaf is correct to say about size limitation 2008 express has limitation of 4 G. With SQL server 2008 R2 they made size limit to 10 G.

You can perform an inplace upgrade. download SQL 2012 express . And extract the ISO file to local drive then right click on setup.exe and select run as administrator.

Then on installation window which appears select maintenance present at left hand side. then select edition upgrade to upgrade your edition to 2012 express.

Please run upgrade advisor before performing up

Hi Olaf & Shanky,

To be on safe side i have done an inplace upgrade from SQL 2008 express to SQL 2008 R2 express. The upgrade went fine and i dont have the database limitation any more but now i'm facing issue with the reporting services.

Whenever i open the SCE server and select reports it gives me the below error. looks like the reporting services have broken after the upgrade.

  • Failed to load expression host assembly. Details: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Reporting.Code, Version=6.0.0.0, Culture=neutral' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. (rsErrorLoadingExprHostAssembly)

Please advice

Whenever i open the SCE server and select reports ....

  • Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Reporting.Code,

  • With SCE you mean System Center Service Manager? See Manual Steps to Configure the Remote SQL Server Reporting Services => "To copy the Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Reporting.Code.dll file" , may this solves your issue.
