SQL 2008 R2 SP2 Update failed

I'm trying to deploy KB2977320 via WSUS and they're failing with error code 84BE000A.  I found the SQL install error logs in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\ and they indicate:

The account running SQL Server Setup does not have one or both of the following rights:  right to back up files and directories, and the right to manage auditing and the security log.

I've tried inspecting and adding various users to these Local Security Policies (Local Security Policy > User Rights Assignment) and the install is still failing.  The logs give no indication as to *which* user doesn't have these rights.  What do I need to do to get this to install via WSUS?

Target System: Windows 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (KB2977320)

Hi mechgt,

Firstly, it is recommended to manually download SQL Server Service Packs and apply them to SQL Server.

Secondly, when you deploy SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 using WSUS, I recommend you use Process Monitor to check which account doesnt have those rights(SeBackupPrivilege and SeSecurityPrivilege).

In addition, about using WSUS to deploy SQL Server Service Packs, for quick and accurate answer, please post the question in the WSUS forum.

Thanks,
Lydia
