SP1 Wont install
Hello All,
In our company we wanted to install SP1 to some of our servers (running Server 2008 R2) and see how well it preformed and if there were any issues with software and the like. Unfortunately when I try and run the program no matter what level user I
am (admin on the machine or domain admin) I get an access denied error (that is all it says). I tried making sure that the only person that was logged onto the server was my user and that I was connected to the console session but still no luck.
If anyone can throw some ideas my way to try it would be appriciated.

Download SP1 and then run it using an elevated prompt (Use run as an administrator )

Have you tried right clicking on the .exe and choosing "run as an administrator". This is using "elevated privileges" as opposed to being logged on as an admin.
What error do you receive?
Though many have had no problems, there have been a significant number of incidents with SP1 on Win7 machines, but the blogs imply the same can happen to server 2008 R2. You may want to hold off on the installation if it is a production server until
the issue is resolved. As an example of the problems see:

Hey guys,
Thanks for the ideas. I tried them both and got the same error (https://picasaweb.google.com/110580080904223700960/Error#5584000998878284722).
The machine is a indeed a production machine, but (as we have 49 of them) we just wanted to see if SP1 would play nice with it.
Thanks and if you can think of anything else please shoot the ideas my way.

boot3r,
What is showing in the Event Log under System and Application during the time that you try to execute the Service Pack 1 update. It should have a reason code or failure code. Also, verify that automatic updates hasn't already installed the roll-up update.
Considering that SP1 is supposed to be an RTM - Current date release of security patches, product updates, and hot fixes.... if your production systems have at least been running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 for the past few months, It may have been
a smooth quick install because a majority of those updates would already have been installed. It would just skip to the nitty gritty and mark a SP1 update.

All,
For some reason I was not even able to run Windows Updates (which we don't have install updates automatically for stability purposes) with my admin account nor a domain admin account, but for some reason when I logged on as the local admin account it runs
fine. Any ideas as to why (I even took domain users out of the guest and user groups).
Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Perhaps someone has edited group memberships or added a deny parameter within one of the groups? The administrator account, known as the 500 account because of the sid, does in a very few cases have slightly different permissions but it shouldn't affect
updates. Do you have another similar server with which you can compare all the memberships for domain admins?Rob Williams

All the servers I have are set up the exact same (which is why I was experiencing the same problem on all of them). I just resolved to logon as the local admin and run SP1 update that way.
Thanks for all of your help.
