SOLUTION - Security Update for Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2  (KB2660465) fails to install - error code 0x80070005

Since 2012.02.15 - I had the problem with one security update - KB2660465 on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 for Small Business Edition (but frankly speaking - it is the same Windows Sever as Standard Edition). I couldn't install it many times because of Windows
Update error 0x80070005.
Firstly - I had cleaned Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory - it is helpfull with many Windows Update errors. No effects. Than checked BITS service status (enabled, automatical), Automatical Update Service (enabled / automatical).

So than I found topic:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserversecurity/thread/0283f990-9935-4f3b-906e-31a37385953c

and read that some guy had the same problem with KB2660465.
So solution is - before installation of KB2660465 - just stop Indexing service. Than this update is installed without any problems :-)

Funny - all other updates - I was able to install without any problems during long days with that problem with KB2660465... Can anybody tell me why ???

Hi,
Error code 0x80070005 means permission problem. When the problem occurs, the update.url file in SoftwareDistribution folder is opened by cidaemon.exe which is the Indexing service. The file is locked so windows update cannot access it. This only affects
some of the updates.
To solve this problem, you can exclude SoftwareDistribution folder from being indexed instead of disabling the Indexing service.
1. Start > Run
2. Typed in MMC
3. Then File > Add/Remove Snap-in
4. Clicked on Add
5. Selected Indexing Service and Add > selected Local computer > Finish and Close
6. Clicked on Add/Remove Snap-in OK button
7. Expanded the Indexing Service on Local Machine > expanded System
8. Right clicked on Directories > New > Directory
9. In the Path section, clicked on Browse button and went to the c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution and clicked OK
10. Changed option for Included in Index to NO, then clicked on OK.
11. Restarted the Indexing service
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Bruce
