SMB Issues with R2 and Win3.11 for Workgroups
All, I have noticed an issues when updating our Domain controllers to Windows 2008 R2. It seems our old devices that connect to the domain/workgroup via Windows 3.11 for Workgroups are experincing errors when establishing the connections to the domain. Only machines that are athenticating agaisnt Windows 2008 R2 machines are having this issue. Windows 2008 x64 DC's dont have a problem. The issue in Wireshark is showing the following error code when the device attempts to connect: "Trans Reponsem, Error: Request Unsupported, returned by Win 95" When testing from the same client to a Windows 2008 x64 DC this error does not shown up in Wireshark.... We have set to allow NTLM on Windows 2008 via group policy setting: lmcompatibilitylevel =0 Anyone else had issues connecting to Windows 2008 R2 DC from Windows 3.11 or Windows 95 device... this could potentinally effect Windows 7 to SMB linux file shares as well.. . Any ideas???

I'm troubleshooting the exact same issue. After installing one new DC with R2, our win95 clients cannot login anymore, and get the "this request is not supported by the network" I can work around it by editing the local LMHOSTS file to point to a DC < 2008 R2. The same error also occurs when doing a NET VIEW \\W2008SRV (a fileserver), so it is not "only" logon/authentication related. I have also tried changing the restricted NTLM security, but so far without any luck. Did you find a solution?

Thanks, but already gone through those documents, and tried both the SMB, LANMAN & NTLM tricks, but nothing seems to help. Just curious to why this is ONLY happening on my windows 2008 R2 servers, all my windows 2008 servers works fine. Will continue digging
