SBS 2003 Domain
I have a few question for the Windows 2003 SBS. Currently, we are running the windows 2003 SBS domain. We would like to add 3 windows 2008 standard server into the existing domain. 1 for the Exchange 2010 std, 1 for the BES, and 1 for the file sharing. Is it possible to join the windows 2008 server and deploy the exchange 2010 server on our existing domain? And can I configure the file sharing server to DC role in the SBS 2003 network? And any steps and guide to instruct me how to complete? Many thanks for all expert.

Hello, "Is it possible to join the windows 2008 server and deploy the exchange 2010 server on our existing domain?" Windows server 2008 is no problem, as Exchange is also running on the SBS i am not sure if they will coexist together, SBS is different on some steps. So better ask in the Exchange or SBS forum about this part. "And can I configure the file sharing server to DC role in the SBS 2003 network" You can have multiple DC/DNS/GC in a SBS domain without any problem. Only the FSMO roles MUST be on the SBS machine. If it is for file services why not leaving it as member server? If you promote it to DC, make sure to choose another partition then C: for the shared folders. Upgrading the schema for Windows server 2008 or higher: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731728(WS.10).aspx Additional DC to domain: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733027(WS.10).aspx For BES please contact there own support if this is supported. SBS has it's own forum site: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/smallbusinessserver/threads Exchange forum: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/exchangeserverBest regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Hi Meinolf, Thanks for your answer, and I have one more question. Is that possible to demote the SBS server and renew the FQDN?

Hi, Thank you for your post here. just to add: It is possible to add seperate Exchange server in the SBS domain to cooperate with the Exchange Server 2003 on the SBS server. Here is the article for your reference (it should work if you add Exchange server 2010 even though the article is for adding Exchange server 2007): Installing Exchange 2007 into a Small Business Server 2003 domain Part 1 – Preparing and Installing http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Installing-Exchange-2007-Small-Business-Server-2003-domain-Part1.html What do you mean when you say "renew the FQDN"? If you need a new doman name for the SBS domain, reinstalltion of the SBS server may be the choice because you cannot rename the domain or demote the AD on the SBS server since there is Exchange server installed on the same server. Hello, domain rename within SBS is NOT supported from Microsoft, so even don't try it.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.
