Roaming Profiles Question
I have a network in which I copied my roaming profiles from one server to another server (due to server failure) - servers are Win2K3. This was a manual copy of the profile shares. I have reset permissions for about 120 users on my network in which they can read and write changes to their profile. I have about 900 users who use a one shared profile, in which they can not write changes to the profile (they receive a new one, on each new machine they log on). This is environment is a school environment, where the students have a shared profile. The old server and new server were running in parallel for over a year. Last Friday, the old server crashed as predicted. Although, all new information was stored on the new server, it appears that Active Directory accounts were still trying to access the old server. It appears that way because no one was allowed to log into their profiles (actually it was taking about 10-15 minutes to download a 12 MB Profile from the new more powerful server). I have double checked the Active Directory user profile settings and home drive settings, and all the profiles point to the correct folders. Is there a relationship between a roaming profile and the computer it is stored on? Could the profiles that are on the new server force the user to look for the old server when the roaming profile is downloading? Or is this a network related bottleneck? I have the same speed NIC, 1 gbps on both servers going into the same switch (1 gbps). Or is this a separate issue on my end that is not related to the profiles (which maybe the case)? This is an issue because while both servers ran everything was running very efficient and smoothly. I will admit some users still accessed the old server from missing changes on their accounts by accident (usually done by scripting on my end). The majority of users accessed the new server for their profiles and home directories. Thank you for your help. Dave D.
