Roaming Profiles: how to keep it small?
Hi There, We want to use Roaming profiles on our network and we tried some setting. We excluded some directory's but the size of some profiles keeps growing. Every day some directory is added tot the list. The only thing we want is that Favorites form explorer and setting of Office get saved and not all other things. I there a way to inlcude directory's tot the profile instead of exclude or is there a other way to only keep the important data in the roaming profile? Thanks, Marcel de Jager

Hi Marcel You can use 1- Use Disk Quota to limit your user space. http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Configuring-Disk-Quotas-Windows-2003.html 2- Use User Roaming Profile Size Limit http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781862%28WS.10%29.aspx and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890460 Thanks

I know that those two things are a option. However when looking further I found that: - Disk Quota's gives al lot of problems with corrupted profiles - For Size limit on roaming profiles user have to have more that a averadge of computers skills when the limit is reached. This isn't the case here! So I'm looking for a other way! Thanks, Marcel

why not use folder redirection instead? with folder redirection, you can have the user use a different path for their files and have disk quota implemented on that folder rather the profile. of course, this will require you control what users are able to manage from their profiles.

I agree with the suggestion of “Size limit on roaming profiles” , if you set limit user profile size by using group policy , this could be done by system itself automatically , it is not require more skills of computer user to setting or configure system. Please read the section “Reducing disk space use, profile size, and logon processing” of article “Group Policy Recommendations for Roaming User Profiles” http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781862(WS.10).aspx Meanwhile , redirect user personal files and entry temporary files of IE could also reduce profile size.
