ReservedPorts on Windows 2008
[reposting from microsoft.public.windows.server.networking looks like this place has a lot more traffic now!] Hi, I'm trying to set up an ADAM instance on a Window 2008 Domain Controller and am having issues due to the DNS server sometimes stealing ADAM's port.. All the documentation I've found references http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812873 , but this doesn't seem to apply to 2008 and doesn't seem to work properly - even though I've reserved a port, a test program I've written still gets allocated it for IPv6, and so does DNS server. Does anyone know what I should be doing? Thanks!

I have observed that reservedports registry key is not working in Windows 2008 as well? How can we let Microsoft know??? Cheers Damien

Microsoft Support has informed me that ReservedPorts is not longer part of Windows from 2008 onwards.. The only way to reserve ports it to make sure they're not in the ephemeral port ranges using netsh - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929851. KB 959215 seems to be wrong.. Cheers,

I have the reservedports key in my 2008 machine by default, not sure if its depricated though. I'll get some more info on this. Meanwhile, what do you find wrong in kb959215?Regards, Amit Saxena

Hi Amit, Sorry for the late reply - for some reason I don't get alerted if someone responds to my posts event though my email seems correct.. It seems that ReservedPorts is not just deprecated but Windows 2008 doesn't even look at it.. So since kb959215 refers people to kb812873 it's misleading.. Plus Windows 2008 isn't mentioned in 812873 so it shouldn't be linked from a 2008 article. Regards,
