Replace server and maintain NTFS permissions
HiI am getting ready to replace one of our servers and when doing that I need to copy all the user data from the old to the new server. What is the easiest way to copy the data and maintain the NTFS permissions?/LasseLasse

make use of NTBACKUP (win2003) or Windows Server Backup (win2008), it can maintain NTFS permissions.

Hi,I have used robocopy for copying files with NTFS permissions. It have worked fine and it is easy to use. It comes in Windows Server 2003 resource kit tools package.http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?FamilyID=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=enIf you alsohave shared folders, robocopycant handle that, so you need to use Permcopy too.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174273 Henry Eklf :: Just one random IT-guy more.

Hi Lasse,You should use File Server Migration Toolkit from Microsoft. A free tool and very easy to use. You can copy data in work hours and start the wizard again after workhours to do a final copy and a finalize (moves ACL and shares).Download the tool here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d00e3eae-930a-42b0-b595-66f462f5d87b&displaylang=enJens Ole Kragh MCITP, MCTS, MCT, Microsoft TechNet Influent Denmark http://jensolekragh.spaces.live.com/
