Repair SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

Hi everyone,

Following an upgrade to SQL Server 2012 which didn't succeed, someone recommended that I repair my actual SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 setup.  The actual setup I have, which btw is running without any problem, is the following:

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CU1 Express Edition with advanced services  (Reporting Services is installed and active)
  • Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Professionnal Edition
  • Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Express Edition
  • Windows VISTA SP2 Ultimate Edition

My request is very simple.  Before repairing a SQL setup:

  • Do I need to stop any services?
  • Any other thing I should stop, uninstall or else?
  • Do I launch the repair from the "Control Panel - Install/uninstall program" menu or can I just run the "SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2" setup file I just downloaded from the .NET.  I prefer asking because I thought that running this setup file under administrative rights could help avoiding privilege problems or else?

  Hope to hear from someone,

Stphane

As with any install/upgrade/repair, it is always a great idea to backup any databases you have on that machine before performing the modification.  That being said, the easiest way to perform a repair is through Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.  There is no need to stop services or uninstall anything before hand.  Click on the entry for SQL Server and click Repair.  This will launch setup.exe for the associated version on your machine and walk you through the repair process.  If you hit any problems with this process, please provide more info on how the upgrade failed and we can try to help troubleshoot.

Thanks,

Hi Samuel,

  Thanks for replying.  I appreciate.

The fact that I have installed the SP2 CU1 update, can this compromise the repair?

It's actually 23h07 here.  If I could hear back from you tonight, I should be ok to perform this repair which was scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, in the morning.   I will then be able to keep you up to date with the results really hoping it will just work fine.

Thanks again for helping,

Stphane

Hi Stphane, the SP2 CU1 should not impact the repair at all.  You can run "SELECT @@VERSION" before and after the repair to confirm that the engine version is still the same to make sure.

Thanks,

Hi again,

Thanks again for replying.  I again appreciate.

It's Wednesday a.m.  I'm on my way to backup my machine and, once finished, I will proceed with the repair.  Please bear with me as I will get back to you with results as soon as it is finished.

BTW, the SELECT statement gave me this result:

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4000.0 (Intel X86)   Jun 28 2012 08:42:37   Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation  Express Edition with Advanced Services on Windows NT 6.0 <X86> (Build 6002: Service Pack 2)

Hi again Samuel,

Backup is done.  When launching the repair from control panel / Add-Remove programs, I got a popup window:  "Browse for SQL Server 2008 R2 installation media".  Where should I find this setup file the repair process is asking for?

Looking at my C: drive for any setup files like "SQLEXPRADV_*.exe", I could find the following:

  • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\SQL Server 2008 Express Install\Downloads\SqlExpressWithAdv\SQLEXPRADV_x86_FRA.exe:  version is 10.0.1601.1
  • C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\SQL Server 2008 Express Install\Downloads\SqlExpressWithAdv\SQLEXPRADV_x86_FRA.exe: version is also 10.0.1601.1
  • The one I recently downloaded from the web - SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe:  version is 10.50.4000.0

Considering that the actual version of my SQL setup is 10.50.4000.0, I must conclude I won't have any choice but to take the setup file I downloaded from the web.  Choosing any one else found on my C: drive might present a version conflict.  Right?

  What action do you suggest?

Thanks again for helping,

Stphane

    version:  10.50.4000.0  date: 2013-01-10

Which one would you suggest I choose for my repair? Or maybe I'm still not looking at the right place?

Hope to hear back,

Stphane

Hi Samuel,

Thursday.  2 days I didn't hear from anyone.  I still can't complete the repair because of this setup file the repair process is asking for.  The setup files I could find on my disk:

  • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\SQL Server 2008 Express Install\Downloads\SqlExpressWithAdv\SQLEXPRADV_x86_FRA.exe:  version is 10.0.1601.1
  • C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\SQL Server 2008 Express Install\Downloads\SqlExpressWithAdv\SQLEXPRADV_x86_FRA.exe: version is also 10.0.1601.1
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2\x86\setup100.exe
    version: 10.50.4000.0   date: 2012-06-29
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2494086\QFE\x86\setup100.exe
    version: 10.50.1790.0   date: 2011-06-14
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2507770\QFE\x86\setup100.exe
    version: 10.50.1777.0   date: 2011-06-10
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2528583\ServicePack\x86\setup100.exe
    version: 10.50.2500.0  date: 2011-07-25
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2544793\QFE\x86\setup100.exe
    version:  10.50.2769.0 date: 2011-07-27
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2630458\ServicePack\x86\setup100.exe
    version:  10.50.4000.0 date: 2013-01-10
  • The one I recently downloaded from the web - SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe:  version is 10.50.4000.0

Again which one should I choose?  One of these or maybe another file?

Really hope to hear from someone!

Hello,

Sorry for delay.

To repair SQL Server installation, you should lanuch the setup.exe from SQL Server installation media which you download from Web site. If you had delete the installation media, you can download from the following link again:

Hi Fanny,

I've checked the website link you provided.  The version of the setup file I can download from there is 10.50.1600.1.  Considering that the version of SQL Server 2008 R2 actually installed on my machine is 10.50.4000.0 (SP2), don't you think it might be a problem?

Thanks for helping,

Stphane

Hi everyone,

I finally took the decision to rebuild my whole computer.  I've spent over a month trying to find a solution in order to uninstall SQL Server 2008 R2 Express but only ended with nothing else than problems.  I think it is enough.

Thanks again to everyone for helping,

Stphane
