Hello, Based on my research, since this DC also performs as DNS and DHCP server, we recommend you execute full backup. If you have CA within your domain, you will not be able to rename AD. Please follow the steps below so that rename dc: 1. Perform a full backup on a Windows Server 2003 with AD, DHCP and DNS. Description of Full, Incremental, and Differential Backups http://support.microsoft.com/kb/136621/en-us In order to rename DC we need to follow different procedure after domain rename.2. I advised you to turn off one DC so that in case we have any issue after domain controller rename we can recover using other DC.3. We used following commands to rename the domain controller:netdom computername DC's_Current_FQDN /add:DC's_NEW_FQDN.verified that msDS-AdditionalDnsHostName attribute for DC is populated with new DC name in adsiedit.used following command to make new name primary:netdom computername DC's_Current_FQDN /makeprimary:DC's_NEW_FQDN.Verified that msDS-AdditionalDnsHostName attribute for DC is showing old DC name in adsiedit.Restarted the DC.After restart used following command to remove the old DC name:netdom computername DC's_Current_FQDN /remove:DC's_old_FQDN.Domain controller was renamed successfully4. Checked DNS and it is showing all the records now ( SRV, host, name server etc)5. Performed same steps on other DC to rename and it also renamed fine.6. At this point DCs were showing new DNS suffix and DNS was also showing all the records. Please visit the links given below to know more about this issue:Rename a domain controller:http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/aad1169a-f0d2-47d5-b0ea-989081ce62be1033.mspx?mfr=trueWindows Server 2003 Active Directory Domain Rename Tools:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb405948.aspxHow Domain Rename Workshttp://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/4d0c3b6e-e6f5-4ab3-9d81-106ae3a715491033.mspx?mfr=trueHow To Use the Netdom.exe Utility to Rename a Computer in Windows Server 2003http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325354Active Directory Product Operations Guidehttp://www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators/cits/mo/winsrvmg/adpog/adpog3.mspx Hope this helps.
