Removing decommissioned DC from DNS?
Hello all, I have a Windows 2003 environment. I just decommissioned a DC (it was actually an SBS 2003 server, but I don't think that matters). Any way, I transferred all the FSMO roles and made another server a GC before dcproming and then joining a workgroup to get out of the domain. My quesiton is, I still see the server listed in the DNS, will that eventually be removed by Windows? What I really want to do is install a new server with a different name, but the same IP address of the old server. This is actually a replacement server (so it also has AD, DNS, etc). I am worried about name resolution conflicts though. Any advice? Thanks!

Hello, if that server is complete removed from the domain you can remove all entries belonging to it from the DNS zones(chekc all folders) and server properties also. Don't forget to remove it also from AD sites and services. After it is complete removed check with the support tools for errors: dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:dcname >c:\dcdiag.txt netdiag /v >c:\netdiag.txt [from each DC, netdiag may work but isn't supported with Windows server 2008 and higher] repadmin /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite >c:\repl.txt (if more then one DC exists) dnslint /ad /s "DCipaddress" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321045)Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

If you have successfully removed the DC, you can manually delete the DNS entry from the DNS zone. If the dcpromo down process wasn’t successful you need to perform a metadata cleanup the remove DNS entry. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc736378(WS.10).aspx Santhosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX http://blogs.sivarajan.com/ http://publications.sivarajan.com/ This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Yes, the DC was successfully removed via DCPromo. I went ahead and just deleted all the entries for the old DC in DNS. Everything seems fine, so I will be bringing up the replacement server with the same IP and see how things go.
