Remote access to Windows Server machine
I have 5 windows servers. All are running Windows Server 2003. Two servers are domain controllers, 3 are application servers. I generally remote into the servers for routine maintenance. Recently one server has begun refusing my remote login saying the computer's client access license could not be upgraded or renewed. I haven't changed any of the licensing. Why would I be getting this message on only one of my servers? Thanks.

hi there,Upon my research , i have found the following information.
After a temporary license expires, a client can only connect to a terminal server if the license server can issue a permanent CAL, or if the terminal server is still within its licensing grace period.
Cause
If you are running Terminal Server Licensing in a Windows Server2003 environment and the licensing mode on the terminal server is set to Per Device but the license server is configured to issue only Per User CALs, then only temporary Per Device licenses are issued from the available pool of licenses. These licenses cannot be upgraded. When the temporary licenses are close to expiration, the following message appears on the terminal server: "Your terminal services temporary client license will expire in N days. Please contact your system administrator to get a permanent license." In this case, Event ID 26, Source: Application Pop-up appears in the application event log.
Similarly, Terminal Server clients that run Windows XP or Windows2000 might receive the following error message, if the client cannot connect to the terminal server for this reason: "The remote session was disconnected because the local computer client access license could not be upgraded or renewed." In this case, Event ID 1011, Source:TermService appears in the application event log on the terminal server, with the following message: "The terminal services client has been disconnected because its temporary license has expired."
Solution
Do one of the following, based on the requirements of your environment and license agreement:
Call the Microsoft Clearinghouse and reactivate the license server in the correct mode. For more information, see Locate the Microsoft Clearinghouse telephone number for your country or region (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=48885).
Change the Terminal Server Licensing mode.

I am already in per user mode. I think I want to be in Remote Desktop for Administration licesing mode on the application server. It says to use Add/Remove Programs to add Remote Desktop for Administration. I don't see anything under Add/Remove Programs relating to Remote Desktop for Administration. What should I add? Thanks.

I've been logging in remotely for the past 3 years. I assum the license was configured by a previous admin. The sever is configured as per user although my other servers are configure for remote desktop admin. Although on the server in question, RDA_ip IS configured.

Hi,
Is the error you encountered "The remote session was disconnected because the local computer's client access license could not be upgraded or renewed"?
Please perform the following suggestion to check whether the issue continues:
1. Please modified the registry entries as per the ones documented in the KBs below.
a. You cannot connect to a Windows 2000 Terminal server if your Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services license is expired:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837321
b. How to override the license server discovery process in Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279561
2. Please changed the Licensing Mode from Per Device mode to Per User mode.
The function of Terminal Server CALs in Windows Server 2003:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822134
3. Please corrected the TS Manager console access issue by deleting the old profile and recreating the profile.
